2015 Cheeky Schoolie Tournament Recap

142 Anglers Compete in 4th Annual Cheeky Schoolie Tournament; Team Compass Crowned Champion

May 30, 2015

West Dennis, MA – The 2015 Cheeky Schoolie Tournament took place on Saturday, May 30th on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The event marked the 4th consecutive year that Cheeky Fly Fishing hosted the catch-and-release fly fishing only tournament, and 2015 proved to be the largest and most exciting to date. One hundred and forty-two anglers from around the country made the trip to West Dennis, MA for the chance to cast flies at early season stripers and vie for thousands of dollars worth of prizes.

The Cheeky Schoolie Tournament is a low barrier to entry, grass roots style event designed to encourage the interest and growth of saltwater fly fishing. The format is simple: the team that catches the 4 largest striped bass wins. This year’s tournament included the likes of some of the nation’s top guides, as well as anglers hoping to catch their first striped bass on the fly.  In typical Cheeky fashion, the 2015 Schoolie Tournament kicked off on Friday night with a party at The Sand Bar in West Dennis, MA. Many teams came out to talk strategy, swap stories and share a beer before retiring early to get some rest. After a 6:00am captain’s meeting on Saturday morning, participants flooded out of the parking lot to fishing spots all over the Cape. Over the course of the day, anglers were met with blue skies, an increasing wind and dozens of hungry schoolie stripers.

When the dust settled, Team Compass—comprised of Matt Reinemo and Bob Ruley, earned a well-deserved victory tallying four striped bass for a total of 113 inches, including one 38-inch bruiser. Their 38-incher was not only the largest bass of the day, but also the largest in tournament history. To cap off their epic day, the anglers took home the grand prize of two Cheeky Thrash 475 Reels, two Costa Del Mar Sunglasses, two Cortland Fly Lines, and $300 in cash.

Rounding out the podium was Team Strip Strike in the third spot. The father-son duo of Nate and Stephen Bent tallied 96.5 inches for the day, collecting two brand new Cheeky Boost 400 Reels and $100 cash for their efforts.

Cheeky would like to thank all of the tournament’s participants, sponsors and supporters who helped make the 2015 event such a success. We look forward to seeing you in 2016!
